Summer in the Garden & Exciting New Garden Course!

The Community Forest Garden is bustling with wildlife at the moment, while some of the onions, peas, beans and elephant garlic have already been harvested.

There's also been something exciting gradually blossoming in a secret corner of the garden - a gorgeous den retreat! Led by Melanie Thorne, from Scotland, who fell in love with the Community Forest Garden when she visited early last year, the project is now well underway.

Melanie said: "I had an incredible time creating this den during my visit in June. A huge thank you to all the amazing volunteers who helped bring my vision to life! Special shoutout to Simon and Anna from Frome, who kickstarted the project with their expertise and dedication.I'm eagerly looking forward to returning and continuing the work on this magical space, hoping it brings joy to many. Immense gratitude to Mark for giving me the creative freedom in this beautiful garden. It means the world to me. And of course, thank you to Andy, Rose, Hannah, Matt, Liisa, and Nick from Bristol for your invaluable help for an afternoon. Your support was truly appreciated!"

Why not visit the garden when you're next at Rockaway and check out the new den, as well as explore the paths and take in the superb views? We love seeing visitors enjoying this beautiful space.

We also have an exciting new 3-part gardening course - Sustainable Gardening in a Changing Climate - which begins with the first session on Saturday 7th September, 10am - 4pm. Led by wonderful RHS Lecturer, Penny Austin, it features another mix of practical activities and observation, based in Rockaway's classroom and Community Forest Garden.

The first session is a general introduction to different approaches to gardening with some basic study around soil, as well as plant science and how the climate affects our gardening. It includes recognising the pros and cons of different approaches to gardening practice, such as traditional methods, no dig, permaculture, using raised/deep beds, forest gardening and biodynamics.

There will also be an examination of more traditional garden styles and a look at alternatives that may be more adaptable. This can be put into a historical context because there are old methods that readily lend themselves to the current requirements of the garden.

Cost for this course is £40 per session for unwaged/benefits or £60 for employed, and includes a delicious home-made vegan lunch.

If you'd like to delve deeper into the subject, Sessions 2 and 3 are available on 14th and 28th September respectively. If you'd like to undertake all 3 sessions, you can book under the discount option and save £15!

Places are limited, so if you'd like to join Penny for the first session, you can book a place by visiting Our Workshops & Courses webpage below. You'll also find info about Sessions 2 and 3, as well as their booking links.

Hope you can join us in the garden!
