SOLD OUT - WORKSHOP - Introduction to electrics for shows and events
This 1 day workshop starts at 10am till 5pm with a break for lunch.
Get an insight into the fascinating world of Electrics for Shows and Events with our old school technician Stefan Hintsches.
This course is for everybody who uses electricity as part of their work and wants to get a better understanding of it - no previous experience required.
It was originally designed for crew members of a travelling circus and is aiming to bridge the gap between the consumers and providers of electricity and to enable people from all different backgrounds to:
- Understand basic electrical terminology.
- Make calculations for power consumption.
- Identify commonly used connectors and understand their qualities and limitations.
- Spot frequently occurring faults on them.
- Identify circuit breakers and understand their function.
- Understand the correct rigging and installation of cables and connectors.
- Use basic diagnostic tools.
- Work safely around electricity.
"The course is great for absolute beginners, to those with a level of site electric knowledge. I really enjoyed the structure of the course and the use of analogies to break down difficult subject material."
Sorelle, Production Manager, Revel Puck Circus
NB: If you select the unwaged/benefits option for payment, be aware that you will be asked to show proof that you qualify for a concession when you visit us. So, please bring relevant identification or appropriate documents with you. Thank you.
Catalyst Club
Founded in 2004, The Catalyst Club is a monthly event inspired by French salons, old debating societies and the wonderfully odd traditions of gentlemen’s clubs. Over the years it has hosted more than 700 talks on everything from zombie films and Marmite to suffragettes, Spartans, bum-reading and slime mould. The only rule: three speakers, each delivering a 15-minute talk on something they’re truly passionate about – the more unusual or niche, the better. After it's first visit to Rockaway in December 2025, Catalyst Club is back monthly for 2026.
Speakers to be announced.
The evening will be hosted by Dr David Bramwell – not actually a doctor, but very much enjoying the title. Bramwell is a true multi-talent: creator of BBC Radio 3 & 4 programmes, author of The No9 Bus to Utopia and The Haunted Moustache, a Sony Award winner for The Haunted Moustache, and a performer with Oddfellow’s Casino. His events are warm, eccentric and always memorable.

WORKSHOP - Break toys, make noise - an introduction to circuit bending
🔨BREAK TOYS MAKE NOISE🔊: Circuit Bending Workshop
Turn a plastic toy into a unique electronic noise/glitch instrument then jam with it! Join us at Rockaway Park on Saturday 28th March for a full-day practical session in electronic experimentation.
This playshop focuses on the subversive art of circuit bending - identifying components, making them misbehave, and jamming together with our creations to push them beyond their intended limits.
Introduction: Learn about components, safe practices and glitch probing.
Break Toys: Find hidden "bent" sounds safely on a live circuit board then plan, solder, swap, bridge, and bypass circuit parts of your own project.
Make Noise: Mount an output socket and join the orchestra!
Take Home:
Circuit-Bending printed hand-outs.
The ‘Break Toys Make Noise’ hand-made fanzine.
A custom sample pack of the day’s recordings will be edited and emailed to participants after the event.
If you bring your own battery-powered toy, you’ll be leaving with a uniquely modified instrument.
Lunch: The Rockaway Park Café will be serving delicious lunches (~£10).
Tickets: £35. Bring a toy (AA/AAA only) and let’s make some noise!

2025 Sunday Sessions
Vegan Sunday Roasts, Arts Market, Open Studios, Open Mic, Normal Magic & More...
You can’t beat a Sunday Session at Rockaway where you can visit our open studios and the Rockaway shop - crammed with artwork and other goodies – or browse a fantastic arts market, with local independent artists and traders.
The amazing Steve Lake (Zounds and Blood Moon Wedding) Carl and Aether Valentine from Acts of Resistance, hosted another great Open Mic slot, which gives local artists and musicians a chance to perform for the crowd.
The wonderful Sarah and Tracey from Normal Magic were on hand offering free mental health advice, as well as their free drop-in family sensory workshop in the Rockaway Classroom.
They were joined by Dan, Rockaway's lovely safeguarding expert and bargee offering free advice on how to access family support - all anonymous and off-grid! Plus, of course a delicious array of home-made vegan roasts.
