MEET THE TEAM
Mark
Proprietor and creative genius behind this DIY gem, Mark is Rockaway’s figurehead, chief alchemist, architect and schemer of bold and brave ideas.
Rockaway is Mark’s artistic creation and he follows in the footsteps of the conceptual greats, although he probably doesn’t even realise it…In that he turns defunct objects and other people’s cast offs and memorialises them into permanent works of art. Mark built this Utopia in the Somerset countryside with an unwavering vision and commitment to recycling and compassion.
Mark, an art school drop out from Yeovil, formed the seminal anarcho Punk band The Mob. After years of living on the road, Mark landed in this disused Quarry and set up a breakers yard. If you lived in a van in the South West in the early naughties chances are you would have come across Mark and bought spare parts from him. The scrap business unfortunately failed and Mark was left bruised and bankrupt. Miraculously fate had other ideas as he managed to borrow the money to keep hold of the land. Out of the adversity, Rockaway Park was born.
Unclassified and hard to label, this DIY project offers something in short supply. Genuine hope. Hope that another way is possible. Rockaway is now host to a myriad of artist studios and events, and also has a happy community of residents that reside here all year round.
Mark’s ethos are parallel to those historical art movements such as Dada, Situationist, Pop Art, Punk art & Fluxus, in that he doesn’t seek permission and uses what already exists. This rough diamond buried in the Somerset hills survives on good old anarchist principles of solidarity not charity. It’s impossible not to meet Mark when you visit. You’ll usually be greeted by his big beaming smile from the cockpit of his forklift or you’ll hear his unmistakable infectious laughter filling the yard.
Mark’s mantra is simple one “For those who say it can’t be done, please stand clear of those doing it”
Marta
Rockaway’s organiser in chief and Mark’s partner, Marta has been involved in Rockaway from the very start, helping with setting it up and running it day to day from mostly behind the scenes.
Without much previous experience but guided by her strong moral compass, Marta stepped into running the Cafe when the need arose insisting that it was plant based, nutritious and affordable.
Not much goes on at Rockaway these days without Marta casting her eagle eye over it. She manages bookings, correspondence and all admin and accounts. She is also responsible for lots of the tasty food grown in the garden. She has tapped into her family farming heritage to guide her in the garden.
As well as managing the accommodation, cafe, admin and day to day running of Rockaway, Marta is also the queen of badge making. If you’re into Punk and like button badges, there is a fair chance that one of your badges was made by Marta.
Innes
To say Innes has multiple roles is underplaying how vital he is to Rockaway - it’s fair to say, he can pretty much do it all.
You can find him at any given time grounds keeping, gardening, landscaping, building things, fixing things, keeping the place nice and tidy and organising where people park on event days, he does hole digging, rock eating and is our volunteer and work experience coordinator.
To top it off, he’s also all over our fundraising and community outreach.
Myk
Myk is the cafe Chef, responsible for most of our tasty weekly menus and helps us keep everything consistent as our resident hospitality guru.
After a lifetime in hospitality, Myk has found a place where he can reconnect with the kind of food he is genuinely passionate about, shaped by years of plant-based cooking.
Myk is big on teamwork — working hard, being self-reliant, and knowing the rest of the team has his back. When he’s not in the kitchen, you’ll find him exploring stone circles, singing, or hanging out with family and friends.
Ellie
Ellie has been helping out at Rockaway for 5 years. She started volunteering with her husband Mark, organising the arts market in 2021. Ellie can often be found in the shop working away in the background organising workshops, answering emails, running our social media accounts, various admin tasks, arranging our events calendar and running our merch, shop and chapel of unrest.
Ellie is also adept at translating Mark’s imaginative brain into some sort of achievable reality.
‘I love being part of the community and goings on, it helps the world feel less overwhelming and mad”
Penny
Penny is our head gardener and grounds keeper. Penny’s work in the garden are a magical and ever changing part of Rockaway. Penny’s role is to care for and develop the grounds, to encourage nurture diversity and create a space where anyone can and enjoy, learn and simply experience nature at its best.
The site is challenging and this adds an extra dimension to the development as we find creative ways to deal with climate change on a south facing hillside that consists of lots of rocks and glass. This site being an old quarry, it makes transforming this hillside even more rewarding. Penny’s work, knowledge and experience have been invaluable.
Flash
Flash is Rockaway’s resident carpenter and builder. Flash has built most of that you see around Rockaway. If it’s wooden, it would have been created by Flash carpentry. Flash by name and Flash by nature, if something needs building around here, it’s done as quick as a flash.
Not just the building of the various studios, chapel, classroom, cafe and venues around here, Flash has also played a huge and invaluable part in creating safe, warm and wonderful homes for all of Rockaway’s residents.
His work ethic is unrivalled and we’re lucky to have such a legend amongst us.
Harry
Harry joined the kitchen team in the summer of 2025 and has been a friend and supporter of Rockaway over the last few years through involvement in DIY punk collective Shitty Futures and their annual festival ‘Unrest’ which is held onsite.
Harry brings with her a decade of experience as a vegan chef and an enthusiasm for the values of food sovereignty - healthy, tasty, locally and seasonally orientated food for all.
When she’s not in the kitchen or promoting shows, she sings and fronts punk band Gimic and is a total force of nature on stage.
Laurie
Laurie is our audio / visual technician at Rockaway. Tending to the sites audio logistics, developing studio facilities and ensuring the stages are event ready.
His role blends technical management with on site community programming, growing the all ages Saturday Noise Club sessions and running circuit-bending workshops.
Laurie can also be found teaching people how to DJ on occasional Sunday Sessions.
Swiss
Swiss is our resident graphic and web designer, filmmaker, editor and content creator.
With a background and many years experience in film post production, Swiss has used his experience of creating new and innovative content for his wide array of interesting clients, in outputting content for our social media channels.
